important update!

We've released a software update that addresses many of the problems found in the earliest prototypes. We want to make sure that all chumbys are upgraded; otherwise they will eventually die (sniff!).

Most chumby owners will be able to do updates over the air. Check which software version your chumby is running by squeezing the upper right corner of your chumby to bring up the control panel and then select Settings > Info. After "versions" you'll see "SW"; the number after that is the software version.

updating over the air - software version 0.9

1. When you see the Update Available screen, select Now.
2. The chumby will reboot and the Special Options screen (restart to normal operation / install updates / restore factory settings) will appear; select "install updates."
3. Select "install from network." (If your chumby reboots right away, it means you aren't connected to the network. Reboot your chumby and try again.)
4. The chumby will install an update, reboot, and then install a second update. It's important that you let the chumby install both updates! When it's done, you will see the message "Success! Update Completed" — this means you've successfully updated your chumby! Your widgets should start playing again.

updating over the air - software version 0.9.1 or higher

1. When you see the Update Available screen, select Now.
2. Your chumby should reboot and automatically download the update.
• If you see the Special Options screen (restart to normal operation / install updates / restore factory settings) select "install updates" and then select "install from network." (If this option is grayed out, it means you aren't connected to the network. Reboot your chumby and try again.)
3. The chumby will install an update, reboot, and then install a second update. It's important that you let the chumby install both updates! When it's done, you will see the message "Success! Update Completed" — this means you've successfully updated your chumby! Your widgets should start playing again.

updating with a usb dongle

Chumby owners with network connection problems will have to do a manual update using a USB dongle. After doing this manual update once, all future software updates can be done over the air.

1. Download the software update from our web site and extract the files onto the top level of a USB dongle. (The dongle must be formatted FAT16 or FAT32. As long as you haven't formatted the dongle HFS on a Macintosh, you should be fine.)
2. Once the files are extracted, you should see two directories on your USB dongle: update1 and update2.
3. Turn off your chumby.
4. Plug the USB dongle into the USB port on the back of your chumby.
5. Boot into the Special Options mode by pressing your finger against the touchscreen and then powering on your chumby. Continue holding the touchscreen until the screen changes to the black and white chumby mascot.
6. Once you've reached the Special Options screen, select "install updates" and then choose "install from USB dongle."
7. The chumby will install an update, reboot (you'll see the opening animation again), and then install a second update. It's important that you let the chumby install both updates! When it's done, you will see a message indicating "Success! Update Completed" and you should be presented with the touchscreen calibration screen — this means you've successfully updated your chumby! If you don't eventually see the touchscreen calibration screen, please go back to step 2 and try again.
8. Finish by following all the onscreen set-up instructions.

Note: There are a few USB dongles that won't work correctly on the chumby. If your chumby is having problems seeing a USB dongle, try a different one. We know that some of the PNY Attache USB flash drives will not work; there may be others.

known issues

• The chumby is unable to mount a new USB drive if it was booted with a different USB drive attached.
• The control panel may be unresponsive after going to clock mode due to network failure. (You'll need to reboot the chumby.)
• Leaving and returning to the widget selection screen on the web site may cause widgets to disappear.
• The chumby's left/right speaker balance and/or headphone output is reversed during audio playback.
• The alarm may sound for only a few seconds before stopping.
• The alarm triggers incorrectly if the chumby's time is changed. (You'll need to reset the alarm.)
• Daylight Saving Time change is not reflected by the chumby's clock. In order for DST to take affect, the chumby must be rebooted or the time zone needs to be set.
• The time reported by the control panel is 23 seconds faster than the time reported by the OS.
• The default timezone shown is San Diego; if you're not on the network, any timezone selected will be ignored.
• The chumby displays a black screen if the widget channel is loaded with no assigned widgets.
