This page is intended for technical development use. If you are curious about the consumer facing features of NeTV, please see What is NeTV.

However, as far as developers and hackers are concerned, NeTV is a robust, wifi-enabled embedded linux computer that can connect to HD video sources and sinks. It has very strong potential applications in education, digital signage, smart energy, and low-cost computing.

Developing Software for NeTV
There are two categories of software development for NeTV.

One is firmware development. This includes the kernel, drivers, and application programs. If you are interested in writing C programs on embedded linux, then you should see the Firmware Development section.

The other is application development. This includes widgets, event generators, and android. If you are interested in creating user-facing applications written in javascript, HTML, and/or Dalvik (Android Java) then please see the Application Development section.

Firmware Development
There are two methods for developing Firmware on NeTV.

* AMI Instance. This is intended for developers, OEMs, and professionals requiring a full SDK. Here, you will be walked through the setup and use of a pre-built development environment, complete with cross-compiler, located in the Amazon EC2 cloud. It uses buildbot and bitbake to create a robust development environment that is suitable for immediate production use. This path allows you to build complete ROM images from scratch, and to create packages that can be redistributed easily through on-line firmware updates.

* local compilation. This is intended for hobbyists and hackers who just need to build a couple programs to get the job done, and do not need a method to deploy their work to a large user base. Here, you can find out how to install gcc on the device and build a quick hello world program.

Application Development
Please choose a category for application development:

* local UI -- modifying the UI presented on the screen
* web services -- port 80 HTTP services that enable webapp, Android and iOS interaction

Tricks
Various hacks you can do to NeTV.
See tricks

USB Ethernet support
The NeTV is powered by a 5V supply shaped like a Micro-USB connector. Conveniently, the board draws around 300-700 mA of current when running. This is only slightly above USB spec, so you should be able to power it entirely from a USB port on your computer. Note that running the board in this manner can cause HDMI voltage to droop below 4.5V, making them out of spec. Also, some systems will shut off power to a USB port that draws more than 500 mA. This mode is provided as a convenience only.

When booted, the NeTV configures the Micro-USB port to act as an Ethernet gadget. It will configure itself with the IP address 10.0.88.1, and runs a DHCP server that will offer your desktop computer the address 10.0.88.4. You'll need to install a driver in order to get it working.

With the network configured, you will be able to connect to the NeTV board through SSH:
ssh root@10.0.88.1

This will work even if the wifi is unconfigured, or if you start fiddling with NetworkManager. This is because the network subsystem completely ignores the usb0 interface.

The NeTV makes extensive use of syslog. It logs both to a local buffer (which you can read by running "logread"), as well as to the USB network on UDP port 6368. To capture these messages, install netcat (which should come with OS X and most Linux distributions) and run:
nc -l -u 6368

To verify logging is working, ssh into your NeTV unit and log a message to syslog:
logger "Hello, world!"

Mobile app development
Android app is available in Android Market at http://market.android.com/details?id=com.chumby.NeTV

The source code is posted on github at http://github.com/sutajiokousagi/netv-android

iOS app is under heavy development and yet to be submitted to AppStore.

However, the latest source code (unstable, usable) is posted on github at http://github.com/sutajiokousagi/netv-ios

Both platforms uses a combination of HTTP & UDP API documented above.

Developing Hardware for NeTV
CAD
Hardware source for NeTV's PCB, mechanical design, breakout board, and FPGA can be browsed at http://git.chumby.com.sg/netv_hardware/ (access permissions should now be fixed)

FPGA
Details on developing for the FPGA, modifying the design, and programming the existing design can be found at FPGA architecture.
Announcements
For old announcements, please see the announcement archive.

October 3: Major release pushed, Current latest is 12. Update should be automatic. Please see release 12 notes.

October 4: Minor release pushed, current latest is 14. Minor bug fixed in control panel, but the primary reason for push is to upgrade factory test infrastructure in the image.

October 20: Major release pushed, Current latest is 19. Update should be semi-automatic, it will trigger automatically but you will probably have to reboot it manually. Update takes around 15 minutes to apply, it's a big one. Please see release 19 notes.
*Note: you may have to manually power cycle your device at the conclusion of the update.
*Note: HTTP API has been refactored, please see http://wiki.chumby.com/index.php/NeTV_web_services

* Because this is a major update, it takes a while on "finalizing updates" stage (it is configuring a hundred or so new kernel modules). The chroma key is off in this state, so you will see a big pink screen during this time. Sorry for the inconvenience.
* ssh is now off by default, you need to go to settings->enable SSH to turn it on.

October 27: Minor release pushed, current latest is 20. Please see release 20 notes.

October 28: Minor release pushed, current latest is 21. Please see release 21 notes.

November 15: Heads up, a new major release is on the way that will break any mods. We are migrating docroot to a git-managed copy on the device so control panel updates are transparent every time the device is rebooted. If you are developing a custom app, please see tricks for ways to set an alternate docroot.

November 17: Major release pushed, current latest is 22. Please see release 22 notes. Major internal structural changes to the UI subsystem.

November 18: Minor release pushed, current latest is 25. Fixed issue with /psp/homepage to allow files to be specified and not just URLs.

Release 22 Notes
UI
* UI now fetches a fresh copy of the latest UI code from git every time the browser is restarted. This means any customizations you make on the local device get wiped. UI is now being stored in github.
* To facilitate developers, a hook is put in /psp that allows you to point the browser on boot to a new location inside the device. So, if you do development, make a copy of the git repo to a safe location, and set the flag to point the browser there. Or else, you will lose your work.
* The UI, now in git, will have running updates as they occur. No release notes will be made for them. However, most recently we have added features to allow for greater customization of update frequency in the ticker, and ouath-based local authentication for twitter and facebook are now incorporated into the product.

Updates
* Updates now feature a fail-safe to roll-over to a backup server in case buildbot.chumby.com.sg is down

Internal
* Support for NeTV motor controller board added as an easter egg
* Restructured web APIs
* Added preliminary support for iOS devices as a remote control for NeTV
Bunnie//wiki.chumby.com/index.php?title=NeTV_beta_programNeTV beta program2011-11-17T10:06:34Z
Bunnie: /* Announcements */

Beta Program
This page here is for beta program users. Bugs, updates and compatibility matrices will be posted here.

Development Background
NeTV's FPGA source is written in Verilog, and is compiled using Xilinx ISE tools. The freely available Webpack download will compile the code for the Spartan 6 XC6SLX9-2TQG144C contained within NeTV. Version 13.2 was used for development of the current release code.

When generating the bitfile, use the argument "-g binary:yes" to create a file with the extension .bin. Or, you can remove the ASCII header on the .bit file using dd if you prefer. Once you have the .bin file, reconfiguring the FPGA is done with the following commands:

fpga_ctl r # this resets the FPGA
cat your_file.bin > /dev/fpga # this blasts the configuration into the FPGA

A 26 MHz clock is provided to the FPGA, and the FPGA also has access to clocks provided on the video ports as well, but the rate of those clocks is variable.

Coming soon.
Register Set
Below is the I2C register set used to set parameters of the design as writ. This is up to date as of version 0xD of the FPGA.
// bit 1 - RD_STB. When high, update the contents of SNOOP_DAT with data at SNOOP_ADR
// bit 2 - enable EDID squashing
// bit 3 - when high, force HPD to show that nothing is plugged in; low, act as normal
// bit 6 - sets the bank to write with register 0x13 (yah yah this is a hack)
//
// REVISION -- now dynamically relays the value specified by snoop_adr without having
//
// bit 0 - enable HDCP encryption of the composited stream. Enables HDCP encryption
// only if the HDCP cipher is used. If the input stream has no HDCP on it
// then this bit has no meaning.
// bit 1 - indicates that Km is ready and loaded (currently ignored)
// bit 2 - enable compositing of incoming data from LCD port to HDMI stream
// bit 3 - when set, ignore incoming data and generate sync based on LCD port signals
// bit 4 - when set, resets PLLs only on the paths designated by bit3 ("self")
// bit 5 - when set, enable "smart locking", i.e., genlock turns off once we're locked
// bit 6 - reset the genlock control machine
// bit 7 - Km semaphore -- used to indicate to the kernel whether an existing process
// is controlling the Km derivation process. This is to resolve the issue where
// the HPD will generate two events to cover Km generation in the case that
// the final protocol requires a "restart" to get the correct Km value to stick

This release is a minor release, which patches critical bugs based upon customer feedback. (The distinction of major vs. minor is based upon whether the board has to reboot after the update, and if the kernel/Qt was updated. This update only affects a few small packages and thus it is considered minor, even though the user-facing impact is large).

Fixes:

* NeTVBrowser command-line should now work again
* UI "gear" and "chumby" buttons should now be responsive while the UI is in the "connecting" phase
* Update script was patched to work with the new NeTVBrowser command structure
Bunnie//wiki.chumby.com/index.php?title=NeTV_beta_programNeTV beta program2011-10-28T10:23:56Z
Bunnie: /* Announcements */

Minor release. Following fixes/upgrades are made available:

Control Panel
* Control panel now locks out keys during transition animations (to prevent double-press of keys causing overshoot of say, scrolling or tab selection)
* Various minor bug fixes

System
* Reliably avoid running 2 instances of NeTVBrowser at the same time
* New behavior for multitab/tab commands. It is now possible to show/hide tabs without destroying them.
* Keep-alive timer was disabled by accident. Use KEEPALIVE command to disable it.
* New HTTP API commands & demo page available (see http://wiki.chumby.com/index.php/NeTV_web_services)
Bunnie//wiki.chumby.com/index.php?title=NeTV_beta_programNeTV beta program2011-10-27T07:53:13Z
Bunnie:

Recovery Mode
* Recovery mode should now work. You should be able to completely destroy the root partition and kernel and be able to press and hold the setup button during reboot, and the unit will connect to any open or WPA-encrypted wifi network, and will then automatically grab a fresh image and recover the device. You cannot destroy the partition table and still recover. Requires IR remote.

Beta Program
This page here is for beta program users. Bugs, updates and compatibility matrices will be posted here.

Please see release 18 notes.

Confirmed Issues
As of firmware release 12
* Control panel does not retain channel selection through reboots
* The reboot software command seems broken. Killing the watchdog timer seem to fix that.

Feature Discussion
* Feature request: make rate of scrolling configurable
* Feature request: add PAL support to enable EU cable box compatibility
* Feature request: add iPhone support

Compatibility Matrix
This page here is for beta program users. Bugs, updates and compatibility matrices will be posted here.

October 20: Major release pushed, Current latest is 18. Update should be semi-automatic, it will trigger automatically but you will probably have to reboot it manually. Update takes around 15 minutes to apply, it's a big one. Please see release 18 notes.

Compatibility Matrix
columns for source compatibility should be: Device description, make, model; and auto-res, forced 480p, forced 720p, compatible; and 1080p truecinema compatible; comments. Numbers in parenthesis indicate the firmware revision that a particular compatibility state was verified in.

compatibility states should be yes, no, and intermittant/partial

Important notes
* Your device may not automatically reboot after the update. If this happens, the screen will be blank, and you will need to unplug and replug the device. This is due to a crash that happens in reboot that was fixed in this release.
* HTTP API is refactored, please see http://wiki.chumby.com/index.php/NeTV_web_services

Kernel
* Add support for interlaced modes
* Add key-repeat to IR remote
* Fix occasional crash due to L2 cache bug
* Fix reboot crash
* Enable many optional kernel modules

NeTV helper
* Add support for 1080i60 and 1080i50
* Add support for PAL resolution (576p)

UI
* Message repeat count is now configurable
* Facebook widget added. Complete OAuth support embedded within NeTV for configuration.
* Enable/disable widget feature added.
* Authentication added to some widgets
* Customization of widgets added -- search_keywoard, num_of_news_fetched_everytime, etc... now exposed to users
* Enable UTF-8 characters as TickerEvent. You can now view Asian characters on Twitter!
* Bug fixes for ticker event, control panel, etc.
* IR remote control now repeats events when button is held down
* IR remote events are delivered to Javascript as a native keyboard event, instead of being an override
* HTTP API is now more friendly and familiar to web developers. See developer wiki (http://wiki.chumby.com/index.php/NeTV_web_services) for more info.

Bunnie//wiki.chumby.com/index.php?title=NeTV_release_19_notesNeTV release 19 notes2011-10-20T09:40:16Z
Bunnie: /* UI */

Compatibility
This documentation is verified at version 12 firmware.

NeTV includes the abilities to download packages that are pre-compiled from the chumby release servers.

To do local development, you will use this facility to install gcc.

Preparing the device
First, connect to the network using the NeTV UI. Once you are connected to the network, ssh into the device.

Then, execute this series of commands to create a unionfs that unlocks the free space on the microSD card:

mkdir /tmp/roroot
mount / /tmp/roroot -o bind
mkdir /tmp/unionroot
mkdir /media/storage/newroot
mount -w -t unionfs -o dirs=/media/storage/newroot=rw:/tmp/roroot=ro unionfs /tmp/unionroot
mount /var/volatile /tmp/unionroot/var/volatile -o bind
chroot /tmp/unionroot /bin/bash
mount -a
mkdir /dev/pts
mkdir /dev/shm
mount devpts /dev/pts -t devpts
mount tmpfs /dev/shm -t tmpfs -o rw,mode=777

Finally, download and install the package to the new unionfs root:

opkg update
opkg install task-sdk-native
opkg install libgcc-dev

This process will download all of the files, headers, and executables required to do C development. It takes a while, maybe a half hour or so. It's recommended to kill the NeTVBrowser and NeTVServer before running this to free up RAM.

Once this process is done, you can now use gcc:

gcc -o hello hello.c
./hello
Hello, world!

The total space consumed by the toolchain is currently around 380 MB.

Important note: every time the device is rebooted, you need to re-do the unionfs. You do not need to re-install the toolchain, as it is already there, but you do need to chroot into the unionroot.
Bunnie//wiki.chumby.com/index.php?title=NeTV_local_compilationNeTV local compilation2011-10-03T11:07:37Z
Bunnie:

September 27: Units at version 9 should go to 11. Version 11 is an update from pre-launch, so don't get too excited; we just fixed a bug in update deployment that should have been fixed a while ago. A new update is in the works that has more significant functionality changes and upgrades soon.

September 29: Update system is currently being reworked again, so updates are off-line temporarily. They will be back on-line soon. At the moment if you run an update you will get a signature mismatch error.

September 29: Rework is done, updates should now be happening automatically. Current latest is 11.

Bunnie//wiki.chumby.com/index.php?title=NeTV_beta_programNeTV beta program2011-10-03T10:57:27Z
Bunnie: /* Announcements */

System
* Fixed TKIP wifi-config bug & WEP hex key
* Deal properly with special characters in network_config
* Added UI to manually configure WiFi network
* Added ca-certificates for HTTPS support
* Add watchdog - If the system freezes it will get rebooted now
* Bootloader - You must hold down the button in order to be able to enter the U-boot console
* CPU - Work around some CPU L2 cache coherence bugs that caused incompatibility with JIT self-modifying code
* Browser -- wrapped restart script around browser, so inadvertent crashes due to L2 cache bugs lead to restart of UI instead of hang
* Recover mode -- there is a non-functional recovery mode in the image. Pressing and holding the setup button will reboot into it. Don't use it yet, will be updated to functionality soon. The real recovery mode will be able to take a totally munged system image and redownload/re-image from scratch via wifi (similar to how recovery mode works on Macbooks today)

Control Panel
* bug fix and major UI update for Panel-Help, Panel-Settings
* control panel is now "chumby-aware", i.e., fetches your channel profiles. You should see much more interesting stuff in the channel listings.
* Enable switching to and from Panel-Help and Panel-SystemInfo in AP-mode.
* Added channel listing in Panel-Channels, enable user to "Set Current Channel".
* In widget-listing, match "NeTV Compatiable" widgets.
* Allow user to edit widgets' parameters for "NeTV Compatiable && Has parameter" widgets.
* Automatically correct the time & timezone by using MaxMind's GeoIP webservice
* Added "Enable SSH" at Panel-Setting and Panel-SystemInfo
* SSH can be enabled through UI

Android
* Convert most UDP operations on Android to TCP/HTTP (enhance reliability on congested networks)
* Added activation using XAPI on Android

This page here is for beta program users. Bugs, updates and compatibility matrices will be posted here.

Announcements
September 27: Units at version 9 should go to 11. Version 11 is an update from pre-launch, so don't get too excited; we just fixed a bug in update deployment that should have been fixed a while ago. A new update is in the works that has more significant functionality changes and upgrades soon.

September 29: Update system is currently being reworked again, so updates are off-line temporarily. They will be back on-line soon. At the moment if you run an update you will get a signature mismatch error.

September 29: Rework is done, updates should now be happening automatically. Current latest is 11.

Confirmed Issues
As of firmware release 11
wifi
* There is a known issue with TKIP encryption, affecting WPA1/WPA2 TKIP-only type links. Please use TKIP+AES, or open. Using Android app 0.5.6 and later will fix this bug, but configuring using IR remote will not work.
* There is a known issue with 128-bit WEP encryption and hex keys.

Feature Discussion
* Feature request: make rate of scrolling configurable
* Feature request: add PAL support to enable EU cable box compatibility
* Feature request: add iPhone support

Compatibility Matrix
Beta Program
This page here is for beta program users. Bugs, updates and compatibility matrices will be posted here.
